Download FocusGrain for macOS
Open the downloaded .dmg file
Drag FocusGrain into your Applications folder
Open FocusGrain from your Applications folder or Spotlight
If macOS says "FocusGrain can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer" — go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click "Open Anyway"
FocusGrain will appear as an icon in your menu bar (top right of your screen)
Click the icon to open the controls
Click "Activate" and enter your license key
Choose a preset and you're good to go

Download FocusGrain for Windows
Run the downloaded installer
If Windows SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC" — click "More info" then "Run anyway" (this is normal for new apps that haven't built up a reputation with Microsoft yet)
Follow the installation steps
FocusGrain will appear as an icon in your system tray (bottom right of your screen)
Click the icon to open the controls
Click "Activate" and enter your license key
Choose a preset and you're good to go
Troubleshooting macOS
If you don't see the menu bar icon, check if it's hidden behind the notch (try expanding your menu bar with Bartender or dragging other icons).
FocusGrain requires macOS 13 (Ventura) or later
If the overlay doesn't appear, make sure Screen Recording permission is granted in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording
Troubleshooting Windows
If SmartScreen blocks the installer entirely, right-click the file → Properties → check "Unblock" at the bottom → click Apply, then try again
FocusGrain requires Windows 10 or later
If the overlay doesn't appear, try running FocusGrain as administrator (right-click → Run as administrator)
